GIDDY UP ALONG THE RIVER
Little Peach has an affinity for horses. She goes berzerk every time she sees one. She dreams of owning a horse one day, and her lifelong wish has been to go horseback riding. A couple of years ago her grandfather rented ponies for her birthday… she spent the better part of an hour circling the front yard on a pony with a pink mane.
We found reasonably priced horseback riding in Dead Horse Ranch State Park and decided to surprise her for her birthday. Trail Adventures runs multiple guided tours daily. We chose the Outlaw Trail, an hour-long out and back trail along the Verde River, including two river crossings. It is flat and easy riding for most of the trail, perfect for novice equestrians like ourselves. There are occasional dips where the hoses may trot quickly uphill or downhill for a short distance. We were very happy with this calm and peaceful horseback riding style. This makes for a perfect morning ride, especially if you’ve never been riding before. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable, providing facts on the history of the park and the local flora and fauna as we rode. She highlighted various species of plants and was quick to bring our attention to a bald eagle perched on a leafless tree.
Trail Adventures at Dead Horse Ranch State Park was a perfect introduction to horseback riding making Peach a very happy little seven-year-old girl.
