NEARBY CAMPING

TOWERING CACTI AWAIT YOU

Technically speaking, this is our second visit to Saguaro National Park. Our first visit lasted ten minutes. We accidentally pulled the camper into the length and weight-restricted road at the north side of the park. It resulted in a precarious back up and turn around at the first opportunity and quashed our hopes of seeing the park since we didn’t have time to make a serious detour to the south and unhitch.

We all agree coming back was worth it. The sheer amount of Saguaros here is incredible. The park is a forest of cacti in the most literal sense and they tower over you as you drive through the park. We focused our visit on the Scenic Bajada Loop Drive taking it northeast on Hohokam Road, returning west on Golden Gate Road where we stopped at Signal Hill and took a short hike to view petroglyphs.

Saguaro National Park is actually two separate areas, east and west, split up by the city of Tucson. We camped at Gilbert Ray Campground just south of Saguaro West.  Gilbert Ray is a wonderful campground and offers you 10-minute access to the entire Saguaro West section of the park.
